Would love to go in the forest next to my house to catch some weird noises.
I had one of those first sony minidisc with a cheap mic that goes with it but it just died on me... and the sound was just muffy with no definition at all.
I'd like to replace it with something more up to date, with a crispy sound.
I think DAT are out of the game in the now, and as i can see loots of litle digital option are poping alround.
do you have any advice on wich (portable) recorder to use, and a good mic for this kind of task ?
Tanks.

Mmmhhh.... I would go for OKM Soundman as Mic. for great Stereo
field recordings---->http://www.soundman.de/ I've heard
amazing recordings from them.
For the digital recorder i would go for a 24Bit/96Khz model.
Maybe the M-Audio MicroTrack 2496 (though i can't recommend M-Audio Stuff).
Otherwise it depends on what money you want to spend.
The Fostex Stuff is really great, but expensive.

great, I've been thinking of starting a similar thread here lately...
I'm also in the same thoughts here, have been using my crappy minidisc and cheap condensor mic.
the fucking noise floor is killing me from the lousy preamps on my MD, and as if that wasn't enough there's not digital out from it...
I've been waiting for the Fostex FR2-LE but it has been delayed for ages now... but I'm starting to think that I'm not up for paying 800 euro's for a recorder, and then I will need a new mic... probably end up at 1100/1200 euro... getting a little bit out of control for sampling microsounds
so besides a cheaper but still nice recorder (and maybe some seperate pre-amp... but was hoping not too) I will need to get a good mic for both outdoor and indoor recording. want to record stuff both in & out-doors, and mostly stuff from a very near distance (like bugs and stuff like that, some kind of shotgun thing is needed I suppose?)

ecm 719, its a good mic you just have to learn how to hold it and stuff so you dont record your own breath, coat noise and all those stuff.
this mic cost like $70. but if you can afford a better one, i would suggest to get the soundman.
