To me, the "minimal" style isn't really about the actual sounds. It's moreso the space in between those sounds and how you utilizethat space in between those sounds to emphasize the actual samples, etc. It's always good to invest in some sort of subtle ambient noise or whatever to not make the mix sound so empty and uninviting (if it's truly "minimal" form). That's just how I see it. However you feel the music, let it go that way. If you like a certain artist's style, try to imitate it and spin your own style off of it over time.

i can't believe nobody has mentioned STOMPER here. Drum synth, sample editor, I get my best bass kicks from here. You can layer sounds, also, and modulate one sound with another. It's free. I highly recommend giving it a try.
