Get a multiface II, IBM laptop still feature PCMCIA cardbus.
You will love the sound of the RME.

Those RME's really are the aston martin's of soundcards, they have the price tags to match ;-)
At the moment in terms of balancing budget/quality it looks to be one of the m-audio range.

i am enjoying my echo indigo. I havn't had any problems with it. Its pretty solid, I don't notice any noise on it. (Someone with mastering ears could probably prove me wrong). Also its pcmcia so I don't have to worry about plugging it in everytime I pull my laptop out.
