is there anything i can do before returning it to the store?
No. Not your responsability anyway.

Dude... don't delay and get a new one. That's what your warranty is for. If they tell you :"We'll send it back and have it fixed..." ...fck that, do not accept. Every one and his dog has a million of those in stock. In fact, it's possible that your unit is a "refurbished" one--fck that. You paid for a new, perfectly working unit AND A WARRANTY, you paid for that as well and that's that.

Go to the store, get what's yours.

Oh yeah... put on a "yo-I-don't-have-time-for-this-crap-ok?" face... they'll listen.
:D

just did that.

they didn't have another one in stock, but they will order a new one. it's a pretty small store.

but i blagged some replacement gear until the new MOTU arrives

I'd just like to point out that unless you actually know what you're doing, even if it's "just a screw" you might not be helping the situation, and I've seen some people get screwed over (no pun intended) by voiding their warranty by messing around with gear.
