dunno if it's overrated and if so,i give a flying phuck....there is a reason for the success of Live i think...ppl that tried Cubase,Logic etc. may found it overcomplicated and when they tried Live they had their first sense of achievement...

Like i said,it's just personal taste...you can make music with all of these programms..
what I meant with Live being a bit "overrated" at the moment is that I hear people talk about it as if it's fantastic and they haven't even properly tried it yet. It's like Ableton can hardly do anything wrong anymore the last 2 years or so.
And I refuse to follow that black and white view, if you know what I mean, no matter how much I love using Live.

Like you said, it's just a matter of personal taste. For me, using Live meant getting the job done a hell of a lot faster, and having a lot more fun.
But you can make music with any good DAW, so yes, it's all a matter of personal taste. :)

yeah i wish i could explain why i dont get on with Ableton, but as already mentioned it is just a matter of person taste.
electronic music to me means using actual electronic machines, computers distill everything down to a screen and Ableton probably does that more than any other software and does it better, whereas my world is one of expansionism, i'm going totally in the other direction, i need more ergonomic control, i need to dance when i'm making electronic music, i dont have the time or patience to fiddle around on a little screen.
i'm the wrong person to comment on this subject.

About that Bigwig thing, thats like Ableton in disguise right? .
Feels like there's really no need to not familiarize myself with Ableton because Bitwig is on its way I think..
I don't really want to waste any time waiting for something that might take a while to pop up.
Spent far too much time NOT finishing any tracks now and it's frustrating as hell.

A couple of years ago (actually more then a few when I think about it) I literally did like two tracks a week, had a couple of cool releases out on Bailey's/Varela's Pornographic Recordings. All seemed to be going well actually.
Now there's nothing, 100's of 2 bar loops, nothing finished any more.. And to be honest, I haven't got the slightest idea what happened.
It's really time to change it up cause this ain't getting me anywhere.

Maybe Ableton will just be a sketchpad for me to jam.. Helping me get ideas and then further expand on that in Logic, who knows?

For now, first a basic understanding of Ableton, after that I'll decide it's use.
So guys.. Any tips, tutorials or must reads?

using Live for production and livesets here and Pro Tools for mixing (just because I am used to Pro Tools).

At first I didn`t like Live a lot because I just was working with synths and didn`t see the benefit but nowadays it`s my favorite "tool" because of it`s sampling capability. Actually it`s the most powerful sampler I`ve ever worked with so far.

But I am pretty interested in Bitwig too!

edit : finally I am used to Live`s look (like a video game you gotta play... ) and I find it hard producing on other analytical looking applications like Cubase or Pro Tools.

Q: "What`s your favorite video game?"

A: "Ableton Live!"

Bitwig looks cool of course...but i'd rather wait for Live 9 which will be very good i think....and will contain mostly of the stuff with what Bitwig comes....

btw:has someone checked OhmStudio yet? i just installed the free beta and will have a closer look at it later when my little son is in bed :)
