ABOUT THE MUTEK 2008 HEADLINERS

CARL CRAIG
(United States)
carlcraig-sessions.com

Now in the nineteenth year of an illustrious career, Carl Craig has long established himself as one of the most pivotal and influential figures in modern electronic music. The most recognizable member of what is commonly known as the second generation of Detroit techno producers, Craig began his career as a teenager apprenticing under techno pioneer Derrick May and quickly established himself as an in-demand producer under aliases such as Psyche, 69, and BFC, before moving on to progressive disco manifestations as Paperclip People and jazz-tinged house as Innerzone Orchestra. The founder and owner of the highly coveted Planet E label, Craig was also one of the central figures behind the 2000 and 2001 Detroit Electronic Music Festival, legendary showcases that attracted a combined two million people in two years. In 2007, Craig was nominated for his first Grammy, for his remix of Junior Boys’ “Like a Child”. This and other tracks appear on the highly acclaimed 2008 double-disc set, Sessions.

CHRISTIAN FENNESZ
(Austria)
fennesz.com

Few contemporary laptop artists have attained the stature and universal respect that have greeted Austrian experimental guitarist Christian Fennesz. Beginning his music career in the Viennese underground as a member of the avant-rock group Maische, Fennesz soon broke away to solo undertakings in the then-nascent laptop experimentation scene, producing abrasive and often clinical sessions that began with the guitar only to be manipulated beyond recognition. He found early notoriety on the Austrian Mego imprint with releases such as Hotel Paral.lel and Fennesz Plays (in which he reinterpreted the Rolling Stones and Beach Boys), before finding larger audiences as a member of the well-received Fenn O’Berg, a trio consisting of Fennesz, Jim O’Rourke, and Mego label boss Peter Rehberg. After a steady ascent through the late-90s, Christian Fennesz hit the stratosphere with the release of 2001’s Endless Summer, an album that was universally accepted as an instant classic of modern electronic music. Since then, Fennesz has stayed at the forefront of digital production with a second Fenn O’Berg album, 2004’s Venice, and the sublime 2007 collaboration with Ryuichi Sakamoto entitled Cendre.

CRISTIAN VOGEL
(Chile)
no-future.com/vogel_microsite

Among the first generation of South American ex-patriots to rise to prominence in European avant-garde techno circles, Chilean producer Cristian Vogel has been releasing compelling experimental electronic music since the early 90s. Vogel built his early reputation with groundbreaking releases on progressive German labels like the legendary Tresor and Mille Plateaux, before eventually making the leap to Novamute at the turn of the decade. A longtime friend of electro-soul troubadour Jamie Lidell, the pair joined forces to form Super_Collider in 1997. Under this guise, Vogel channeled futuristic-funk that was equal parts James Brown and glitch-techno, a telling precursor to Lidell’s releases ever since. Vogel has remixed the likes of Radiohead, Thom Yorke, Maximo Park, Juan Atkins, among numerous others. Recently, he has returned to his core interest in electro-acoustic experimentation, creating soundtracks for Swiss choreographer Gilles Jobin’s dance company, which has resulted in the 2007 release, Music for the Creations of Gilles Jobin.

THE FIELD band
(Sweden)
myspace.com/thefieldsthlm

Sweden’s Axel Willner, who records as The Field, is currently one of the most critically acclaimed names in contemporary electronic music. His highly coveted debut album, From Here We Go Sublime, appeared on the venerable Kompakt label in 2007 and quickly crossed over into more mainstream circles to become one of the most critically acclaimed albums of that year. The Field specializes in producing a blissed-out, circular form of trance that matches its minimalism in emotive gesture. For this MUTEK performance, Willner will be presenting the Canadian premiere of his live trio.

KODE 9 & THE SPACEAPE
(UK)
kode9.com

A quintessential ambassador to the explosive UK dubstep scene, London’s Kode9 has done more to propel the notoriety and influence of the genre than any other producer currently at work. As an artist he has issued numerous groundbreaking singles on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex imprint, classic dubstep outlets like Tempa, and his very own Hyperdub label, the home of his critically acclaimed 2006 debut album with The Spaceape, Memories of the Future. As the founder of Hyperdub, he has cultivated a roster that includes the infamous Burial. This year, Kode9 arrives with The Spaceape, the dubtronic MC who lends much of Kode9’s productions their distinctive vocal edge. The Spaceape is renowned for developing a haunting spoken-word chant style that touches upon counter-cultural social and political issues.

MODESELEKTOR
(Germany)
modeselektor.de

With their stunning live performances and genre-mashing approach to techno composition, Modeselektor’s Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary have earned themselves an international reputation among music fans and high-profile peers alike. Radiohead’s Thom Yorke was one of their first vocal supporters, and listening to 2005’s Hello Mom! and 2007’s Happy Birthday!, it’s not hard to see why. Modeselektor gleefully disregard the rulebook, incorporating heavy doses of dancehall, hip-hop, jacking techno, IDM, and ambient onto corrosive templates that bring to mind French acts like Justice as well as more highbrow British stalwarts like Autechre. Modeselektor do it all, and they do it extremely well.

MURCOF
(Mexico)
murcof.com

Unquestionably one of Mexico’s most high-profile electronic composers of this decade, Fernando Corona has been working as Murcof since his 2002 debut, Martes, emerged on the Mexican label Static Discos. The album was quickly picked up for international release by the large British independent imprint Leaf, which has also released Caribou, Four Tet, and Colleen. Murcof specializes in a moody variation of ambient techno that focuses on the dark and subliminal timbres of the genre. His subsequent albums, namely 2004’s Utopia, 2005’s Remembranza, and 2007’s Cosmos, have earned Corona an international following for his distinct interplay between the modern classicisms of Arvo Pärt and Brian Eno and the eclectic electronic sounds of modern Europe. Simply put, Murcof’s music aims for beauty without sentimentality.

RADIO SLAVE
(UK)
rekids.com

Radio Slave’s Matt Edwards is the central figure of the current British progressive house revival. An influential figure in dance circuits, in the last five years Edwards has ascended to the pinnacles of house music through a cavalry of aliases that include Radio Slave, REKID, and the Quiet Village Project (with Joel Martin). Radio Slave has an uncanny ear for bringing together all the major eras of house and techno – from Chicago jack-house to Detroit analog techno, from British progressive house to more minimal German strains – and blending them together into music that sounds altogether new yet inspiringly familiar. Edwards has also cultivated a talented roster of like-minded producers at his REKIDS label, which has become an indicator of high quality for dance music enthusiasts the world round through singles by Luke Solomon (also known as one-half of The Freaks), Toby Tobias, Mr. G, and Spencer Parker.

SLEEPARCHIVE
(Germany)
sleeparchive.de

Having steadily built up a reputation as a clinical minimalist de rigueur, Germany’s Sleeparchive has been garnering profound respect from the techno community with every new work he’s released since 2004. The project is the work of Roger Semsroth, who emerged in the early years of this decade as the dark electro act Skanfrom. Ever since, Semsroth has been moving increasingly in the direction of industrial-inflected minimal techno, drawing comparisons to the likes of Pan Sonic and the Raster-Noton family. Yet unlike those acts, Sleeparchive is drawn to the steady pulsations of an imaginary dancefloor that may be more suited for a hospital lounge than any of Berlin’s club. This unique angle has earned him vaunted spots on Richie Hawtin’s seminal DE9 | Transitions mix album.

TIM HECKER
(Canada)
sunblind.net

MUTEK is extremely proud to present Montreal’s Tim Hecker as one of its 2008 headliners. The honor is truly deserved. A veteran of the Montreal experimental community, Hecker has performed at the festival numerous times over the years, as his international reputation has swelled to enviable proportions. Though he began his musical career as the ambient techno act Jetone, Hecker soon dropped all semblance of rhythm for more intense and atmospheric drone compositions under his own name. His work often bridges the divide between artful dissonance and avant-garde classical, delivering pieces that are at once harsh and soothing. He has since amassed a wide cult following with such classic albums as 2001’s Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again, 2003’s Radio Amor, 2004’s Mirages, and 2006’s critical high-point, Harmony In Ultraviolet.
