Nee, het boeken van een Duitse dj betekent niet vanzelfsprekend dat er Duitse toestanden zullen plaatsvinden. We zullen uitleggen wat wij onder 'Duitse toestanden' verstaan en hoe we dit willen bereiken. Onder Duitse toestanden verstaan wij een manier van feesten, een gevoel en een lifestyle welke naar voren komt in alle aspecten van de housescene. Dit is niet te bereiken door een of meerdere djs, een muziekstijl, openingstijden, publiek of welk afzonderlijk aspect dan ook. Het is een totaalbeeld voortkomend uit een gevoel waarin een dj een grote rol kan spelen.
Een belangrijkste Duits aspect wat we met WNY willen bereiken is het wegnemen van de kaders omtrent een houseparty of clubavond in Nederland. Kaders in de zin van dat van te voren vast staat naar welk feest je gaat, hoe laat het begint en hoe laat het is afgelopen, dat djs een set van twee uur draaien etc. Je koopt een kaartje voor Awakenings, je bent er om 01:00, om 03:00 slaat je pil in, van 02:00 tot 07:00 is het feest, om 07:00 is het afgelopen en dan is het ook echt afgelopen. En zo gaat het de volgende keer weer.
WNY wil hier van afstappen. Want feest betekent voor ons volledige vrijheid. We organiseren geen feest zoals er al duizend zijn met oud en nieuw, maar op 1 januari van 14:00 tot 24:00. En dan niet met een vaststaand verloop van de avond maar een die voor een ieder zelf is in te vullen. Aan het begin van de dag kun je in de kussens en banken lekker chillen met rustige muziek, later gaat het los en je kunt tussendoor zelfs ff weg om wat te gaan eten. Je ziet maar, het feest duurt de hele dag. En als het om 24:00 nog steeds gezellig is, dan gaan we gewoon door.
Deze volledige vrijheid en het wegnemen van vaststaande kaders zijn de belangrijkste ingredienten voor wat wij noemen ‘Duitse toestanden’. Alle spanning wordt weggenomen en vervangen door een tijdloos gevoel. Je zit niet op je klokje te kijken wanneer de laatste dj begint, je ‘zit er in’ en blijft dat voor je gevoel altijd. Het is een instelling die vereist alles los te kunnen laten en gewoon te gaan.
En bij dit gevoel hoort ook muziek. Muziek die niet van hoogtepunt naar hoogtepunt gaat maar die een staat op zichzelf is: zonder gevoel van tijd. Ingetogen en toch enerverend en dansbaar: dat is de Duitse aftersound. Djoker Daan is de koning van deze sound wat hij als sinds jaar en dag bewijst in clubs als Ostgut en Tresor. Djoker is een dj die het Loveparade-weekend afsluit in Tresor tot maandagmiddag 15:00. En om dan weer terug te komen op de vraag of het boeken van Djoker alleen Duitse toestanden geeft, nee. Maar wij werken al jaren toe naar het neerzetten van dit gevoel en die sfeer. Zet ons in een bushokje neer en we gaan helemaal los. De basis is er dus al. En het feit dat we de dj hebben geboekt die wat betreft sound en attitude het beste past bij dit concept geeft ons de zekerheid van Duitse toestanden. En dat ie Duits maakt dan geen reet meer uit.
No, we don’t have a German atmosphere just because we have a German DJ. We will explain what we mean by ‘German atmosphere’ and how we want to accomplish it. For us, the German atmosphere is a feeling, a way of partying and a lifestyle which involves every single aspect of the house scène. This cannot be accomplished by one or more DJ’s, choice of music, closing times, people or any single aspect at all. It is the sum of all aspects coming forth from a feeling. In this feeling the DJ can play a large role.
An important German aspect we want to achieve with WNY is to take away the framework around house parties or club nights in Holland. Frameworks in such a way you always know where you’re going, what time it starts and ends, that a dj-set takes two hours and that it’s only at night. You buy your ticket for Awakenings, you’re there at 01:00, at 03:00 you’re E is kicking in, from 02:00 to 07:00 you’re partying and than the party’s over. And that’s it. And that’s how it will be next time. WNY want to give the opportunity to throw away this framework because partying means complete freedom to us. We don’t just queue in and give another party on New Year’s Eve. We give a party the day after, during the day, where you can come at 14:00, 17:00 or 20:00. You can chill out on the benches and pillows, hang at the bar or dance all day. You can even go away to eat something and come back later as we are open all day. And if the party’s still pumping at 24:00 we’ll party on.
This total freedom and ignoring the usual house-framework are the most important ingredients for what we call a German atmosphere. Tension is being replaced by a timeless feeling. You’re not checking your watch to see when the last DJ will start, you’re totally in this feeling and feel like it will last forever. It’s a lifestyle which demands the quality of being able to let everything go and free your mind.
And it’s this feeling that brings us to a specific style of music. Music which doesn’t go from highlight to highlight but one which is a state itself. Modest but energising and danceable: the German aftersound. Djoker Daan is the king of this sound. Something he has proven for years in the early hours of the Berlin-scene. Djoker is a DJ who plays until Monday 15:00 at Tresor during the Loveparade-weekend. And to come back to the question if a German DJ will automatically give a German atmosphere: no. But we have been living for years now towards the feeling and the lifestyle earlier described. Put us at the bus stop with a ghetto blaster and we will go completely out of our minds. This means the basis is already there. The fact that we have booked the DJ who has the sound and the attitude which fits with this feeling and lifestyle better than anyone in the world, for us, is a guaranty for a German atmosphere. And if he’s German or not, then, is completely irrelevant.
