Spring is here! Well… fingers crossed we haven’t seen the last of the sun. And to get us all in the mood Doubtingthomas busts some funk for Metroline.

Grind & Shine does exactly what it promises to do. Chi-town synths and deep, dirty bass growls come together perfectly. Like a cool breeze on a hot summer day, each perfects the other. And then there’s that hip-wiggling b-line straight from the Bernie Edwards songbook. Good times!

The EP’s title track, Masoneria sticks with the 1970s funk theme. This time the track is infused with a definite afro beat flavour. Those complex rhythms flow over pads that morph seamlessly from the menace of early Underground Resistance to the comforting glow of Balearic house.

More lush pads and African rhythms combine again in One Hundred And Sixty Four, a track that rolls and glistens like a calm sea on a sunny day. Gorgeous.

South Bank takes that whole Afrobeat vibe to its limit. The funky drummer really lets loose on this one, with all manner of crashes, clonks and clanks firing off left right and centre. The rest of EP might be more South Beach, but this track has a definite London flavour.

And for a complete change of pace, the EP is rounded off with a collaboration with new London talent Daphne. The result is a Villalobos style bump – crunchy and punchy, with a wigglesome rhythm and a pleasingly organic structure.
