Argentinean born Santos has been part of the Immigrant team for some time. His track Rosario was one of the standout tracks from last year’s Connectivity Sampler LP. The past year has seen a maturing of his sound and mindset – having found his way across the sea to Berlin, Santos has established himself firmly as one of Europe’s most promising young techno artists, having recently released on Gluckskind Schallplatten and Someone Else’s Unfoundsound label. This fifteenth Immigrant Digital EP showcases Santos’ talents ahead of his vinyl release early next year. Full of twists and turns, it’s a dark, techy, minimalesque treat perfect for every afterhours from here back to South America. Current Romanian wunderkinds, Hermannstadt Collective, take their turn on remix duties, upping the tempo in fine style. Party on.
“ A1 – AM (Original Mix).” Opening the EP with an absolute peak time beast, AM speaks directly from its belly to every waning soul that happens to be in dancefloor vicinity – layering sound upon sound, the result is spooky, echoing and full of space and tension. Throughout a frankly mind bending build-up, drums, bleeps, drops, distorted samples and well placed chords all compete for attention, whilst those taunting vocals ensure that the track will be remembered long after it has finished playing.
“ A2 – AM (Hermannstadt Collective Remix).” Kicking off the pace right from the beginning, the Romanians serve up an extra slice of groove and a touch more warmth. Utilizing vocal samples to as great an effect as the original, the remix ups the tempo a little and brings in that Hermannstadt kick sure to fuel the dancefloor, well documented in previous offerings for Immigrant. Overall, less mind-altering, a little more playful.
“ B1 – Impulse (Original Mix).” Using mixed of-the-moment tribal drum sounds and interspersing them with techy, minimal samples and resonant chimes, Impulse, in Santos trademark style, has plenty of space and an element of eerie excitement. Creeping along to a dramatic climax, the track drops out to kick in with a little extra groove and some well placed hi-hats to get hands in the air. Will add a few extra dimensions to any set.
