[SER011] FRANK HAAG - TALES OF THE BURNING RANGE ROVERS

Serialism Records is proud to present its 11th release from the Dutch studio whiz Frank Haag, Tales of the Burning Range Rovers EP.

Frank Hagemans is a many of many talents. Under his real name, the Amsterdam native studies Sonology at the Hague's Royal Conservatory where he experiments with the outer limits of analogue and digital studio techniques, producing sound art and musique concrete. However, by night he puts these skills to use for a very different purpose altogether under his Frank Haag moniker: the uniquely hypnotic power of the 4/4 beat.
Musicality having been in his blood from a very early age, it was hearing Underworld as a teenager that opened his eyes to the possibilities of electronic music. Natural musical ability combined with his technical know how have allowed him a much wider palette of expression in his productions and it shows. The sheer detail of his sound is overwhelming at first, the basslines are peppered with poly-rhythmic percussion while
unfamiliar instrumentation drop suddenly in and out of the groove.

This unsettling effect is put to perfect use in these tracks aptly titled things like 'Facing a New Nightmare' and 'Battlefield Picknick'. The first track is a creepy minimal house number peppered with the monstrous grunts and growls of some Lynchian nightmare while some discordant brass howls in pain. No wonder Oliver Ho has described Haag as “if Stravinsky made techno”! 'Lust' kicks off its strangeness with some barely heard conversation between two of the damned, then gets straight to business with synth washes and a repeating vocal doing battle with the kick. Around the midway mark, it breaks into an ethnic percussive workout accompanied with the vocals of what sound something like Villalobos doing his best impression of Vincent Price. Sierra Sam brings some Motor City flavour to the remix, complete with synth stabs, old school claps and snares and a bouncing squelchy bassline.
