Michelle Grinser has an impressive résumé. After DJing in Munich throughout the mid 1990s, he formed the electro/rock hybrid duo Dakar & Grinser, whose debut album was released on Disko B in 1999 and soon re-released by Virgin. In 2000, Grinser relocated to Berlin where he established a residency at the legendary Ostgut. In 2002 his new pop-based project Grom released an album on Ladomat 2000. During all this time, he also did mixing work for Gigolo, remix work for Wall of Sound, BPitch and others, on top of his regular DJ gigs.
All this aside, ToysForBoys brings you two solid, flawless productions from the man who now simply goes by Grinser. With last year’s EP for Alphahouse and this year’s for Junion, we’ve seen Michelle focus his work more toward the dancefloor, albeit with a heightened sense of maturity and nuance. “Left Handed Right Eyed” shimmers through the speakers, with warm, static-tinged hi-hats keeping the pace, while synth tones peek through the cracks like beams of light in a dark, dusty room.
On the flip, “The Knowledge” shows Michelle’s willingness to experiment with unexpected tambors, building this groover around a filtered guitar motif, ever-so-slightly influenced by the Daft Punk school of thought, but unmistakably German at heart – what you might label as “minimal disco”. Over it’s nearly 10-minute duration, Grinser finds a perfect balance between uplifting vibes and melancholy moods, oozing elegance all around. Delicacy has rarely been so compelling.
