Deep chord shots

Post by elluiq »

Hello people of the good taste

I really want to learn how to make the following synth/chords:

https://www.beatport.com/track/underest ... ix/3415296

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_LEl-ExGTc

https://soundcloud.com/minimmal-movemen ... -313171669 (@ 26:00, and also the second more disonnant chord that fades in)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sutSzwiczPM

https://www.beatport.com/track/hornz-an ... ix/4676426

http://www.loopmasters.com/genres/52-Mi ... 7-Hermanez (demo loop 6!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRQ1CUrihkw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSlDFYuQiGo

They are (a lot, i know :p) all different but also have the same sound somehow.
I tried doing it with sylenth and a filter effect but I don't get the sounds of these, which are a lot better.

Can you guys help me out with advice how to make these? What kind of equipment do I need?
Or do you know some good sample packs where I can find more of these sounds?

Hi mate.

Struggling to hear on my phone so it's difficult to make out the chord types so will have another listen to some later but you don't mention what chords you have already been trying, if you can reply with the sort of chord shapes you have been experimenting with, it might save a bit of time in a reply.

Probably more to do with the chord types rather than the sound as you can filter down any sound and apply an envelope.

Hey man,

Thanks for your reply:) Most of them are probably good to make with a sawtooth. I tried some chords with them and came pretty close (but not enough so I will have to experiment more)

These ones are somehow different:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_LEl-ExGTc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sutSzwiczPM (These two really sound like they have the same sound, only another filter)
https://www.beatport.com/track/hornz-an ... ix/4676426 This one sounds like it it pitched down or the harmonics are pitched down (like they do with the deep house vocals). What I also really wonder is what is the original sound?
And this one: https://soundcloud.com/minimmal-movemen ... -313171669 (@ 26:00, the chord sound at the end of the 8/8)

I can't come close to these sounds with sylenth or another plugin.
Can you please listen to these and tell me your thoughts? What could I use for the sounds basis (like what kind of synth) to create these?
Or do you know some good sample packs where I could find these?

Make them yourself mate, it's not difficult and you'll have much more creative options.

Meant to reply but forgot being Xmas and all but for the vast majority on tracks in this vein, there are a number of common chord types and basic variations on how you voice them will give you a slightly different sounds.

For the chords, apart from Dub Tech stuff, you want 'bigger' chords than basic triads so look at both major and minor 7th chords and minor 9th chords and inversions thereof. That will give you a good starting point.

So as for some examples using C as the root note:

CMaj7 = C/E/G/B and a popular inversion is the 2nd inversion of the same chord but voiced like this: CMaj7/2nd inversion = G/B/C/E

Cmin7 = C/Eb/G/Bb or 1st and 2nd inversions respectively: Eb/G/Bb/C & G/Bb/C/Eb

Cm9 = C/Eb/G/Bb/D or a well used inversion esp in some deep house detroitish stuff etc is: C/Bb/D/Eb/G.

Cm11th = C/Eb/G/Bb/D/F not common really but I like this chord esp played like this in ascending order: F/C/G/Bb/D omitting the 3rd/Eb

That's certainly a very good grounding and you can transpose any of those chords to any root note and try out major or minor variations etc and maybe look up sus chords and find other interesting voicings too, adding notes , omitting notes etc.

For these sounds in a short stabby stylee, it's just a case of setting up the ADSR envelopes and filter envelope/s and filter type etc. Maybe some short LFO to get the shape you want, a lp filter to knock the top end off etc. But basically, you can create big pads, sound beds, bright stabby stuff etc from all chord shapes and tailor the sound as you see fit. But yeah, it's all about the chord base really and sculpting a sound from there. Sometimes you can take things further with a sampler than a synth, so you could sample off a long chord which youve made sound good and alter the envelope and filter in many ways inside a sampler and literally make tons of variations on the same sound - which is way better than using a sample pack of some short chord stab with a LP filter. You're limiting yourself from the off really :)
