Techno - how to sound good, questions and demos

Post by nomorenames »

It's my first post here so Hi guys!
First of all I just want to sorry for my English, its not my main language.

I was reading this forum from time to time and I have got my first questions.
I have read a lot of stuff about how to resample and how to process the sound (eq, fx, amp's etc.) but still I think I missed something.

How to build beats which are 'super simple' and sounds really really good? Here are the two examples which I am listening to over and over.
1. Shifted - Gates

hi-hats are insane for me, have no idea how to achieve that result, I hear reverb (but not metallic reflections) and at first I was thinking that are 909 samples but not sure anymore.

2. Ø [Phase] - Misaligned
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Jb_h7MAgJY
How to achieve this bass? It's some kind of toms or what? Have you any ideas?

Also if you have a moment here are my demos, you can point me what I am doing wrong.
My beats are pretty simple but there is something wrong with the sound, maybe cutting eq too drastically? Help :)

All advice are welcome!

For the O Phase bass:

I'm not hearing a bass sound, separate from the super boomy kick/tom sound.

It definitely does have a big tom feel to it, and there's clearly lots of reverb on the low end.

First thought: in SubBoomBass, you can synthesize bass tones with a percussive top layer and a sub underneath. You could also achieve this in by layering a sample of something like a Sordo or a Taiko bass drum over a synth tone, then playing around with verb, lo-passed.

I have used layered tom samples and kick and was pretty close with this kinda boomy kick :)
