i think that's a good way to put it. there's a very complex simplicity about techno records. even stuff which is stripped down to the bone, it has a complexity about it, which can be demonstrated by the fact that even if you know the instruments, the chords etc etc you would find it hard to recreate the actual atmosphere and feeling of the track.

i found it on gearslutz,

it describes very good the main differences

Here's how I would separate minimal techno from minimal sound-wise:

Minimal -
1. A softer, rounder, boomier kick and a housier rhythm - 120-130 bpm
2. Patterns of glitchy, strange organic samples played back in a funky way
3. Clicky / clacky, snappy percussion
4. 80% of the time the snappy/verby snare will be the emphasis
5. bassline is bubbly and funky but quirky and deep

Minimal Techno -
1. Harder Kick that's stiffer, more ridgid in it's rhythm - 130-140 bpm
2. Repetitive arpeggios, thick stabbing synths
3. Dark and sometime tribal percussion
4. 80% of the time a dark hard clap will be the emphasis
5. Bassline is hard, funky and aggressive or stuck to/inside the kick
the relation to (typical US based) house is quite easy, slower tempo, typical 909 / 808 Sounds, warm Pads and rough sounding (depends on the used sampler (SP1200, MPC3000, MPC60, S950, S3000, S760 etc.)

Synths are used in both styles are old Roland and Yamaha ones.

A very important thing in House is the way of using Samples and what kind of.

all approaches to mentioned styles are a direct reflection of musical understanding

 dear lord gearslutz what a load of bollox

sorry i dont mean to insult anyone, but that generic categorization just means nothing to me as a minimal techno producer.

in the ears of the beholder only
