custom laptops

Post by agodi »

Does anyone know of any custom laptop manufacturers based in europe? I kind of shot myself in the foot a while back by buying an audio interface that requires a PCMCIA or an Express card slot, a feature that along with TI firewire seems to be disappearing from most laptops. It all works fine for now on my current laptop but I will need to upgrade soon as its getting a little old and slow.
I know there's few speciallist laptops out there optimised for music production but I haven't found the the right one yet. I've only really looked at UK based companies so far, does anyone know of any others based in Europe?

I couldn't find any new laptops made with a firewire port, but I got an ex business one cheap from ebay. In very good condition, with warranty and more than fast enough for anything i need it for.

Cheers guys!

@oblioblioblio: Yeah buisness laptops seem to have more i/o options, in fact my current laptop is a business model. But even with the right connections a lot of the laptops out there wont work with some interfaces..its seems to be a bit of a mine field!

@livecollective: cheers, hadn't heard of Frost, the "audioframe mobile" looks like it may be ideal

Anyone know of any others?

I'm pissed that the industry is fading out firewire with new laptops, leaving only usb, with nothing to take its place.

Even the laptops that do have firewire may not work with a lot of interfaces unless they use a Texas Instruments (TI) chipset, and appently thats almost been faded out completely for a cheaper alternative.
The only options left are to move to custom desktop, a custom laptop or a mac...basically its going to be expensive whatever route I go!

thats why i went the used route. but i don't use a computer for composition so i was happier to go with a used one than if it was my primary compositional tool.

Most of my composition is done ITB so looking to take adavantage of a faster processor and a solid state hard drive....probably looking for more than I need but I'm getting greedy ;)
