Roland SDE 3000 broken output

Post by Opuswerk »

Hello mnmlers,

I've recently got my hands on a Roland SDE-3000, thanks to a service swap. However the unit is slightly defective, in the sense that it does power up, LCD screen boots just fine, memory, seems fine, and all knobs seem to be working perfectly, BUT... The output is really not what i expected it to be. Nor what i believe it should be. However bypassing the fx the signal comes out just fine.
You can grab a zip with 3 different audio files of what it sounds like here: http://bit.ly/JWkC2Z . Be aware that it sounds more like glitch than delay, so turn your speakers down accordingly.

I did open up the unit to look for potential blown fuse or anything suspicious, but couldn't find anything. But then, i don't know so much about electronics.

Seeing the service swap deal isn't over settled yet, as I had to take the unit home to test out, i'm looking at how expensive or difficult it might be to fix it. I'm quite a noob regarding electronics, and don't know people who could fix such things around town. So any help will be greatly appreciated

I would be careful as has an internal power supply. If you are not very confident with electronics, I wouldn't recommend poking around inside it with it turned on.

I do this sort of thing all day at work. So I do know my circuits a bit.

Do you want to learn how to fix it?

Thanks for the reply lem.

I'm definitely up for learning how to fix it. It could be a step in me fixing the MKS70 i've got, and that the only repair guy i know couldn't repair...

I believe i could borrow quite a lot of the tools from friends or my father.

The most useful tool when repairing electronics is the service manual. If you can't get one, you are pretty much stabbing in the dark when trying to repair it.
I have an oscilloscope on the bench at the moment, only to find my service manual is an older revision. It is basically the same, other than the part that has gone wrong! -twisted
It's still in bits because fixing it requires manually tracing the boards. With something like a SDE or an oscilloscope its very hard to trace and gives you many headaches.

There is no such thing as an un-repairable bit of equipment. It just depends on time and parts.

See if you can find a service manual with schematics and BOM's and I will see what I can do to help!

I believe they're both here:
Owner Manual:

Service Notes:
http://www.houseofsynth.com/hos-downloa ... -Notes.pdf

I would need to find an oscilloscope though, as I don't have that handy. How much time do you think the repair would take? I'm asking this, as it was given as "payment" for a website i built. So I just need to know if it's worth it. Not repairing the delay, but swapping the delay for the website. Especially seeing the website is already done.

You would be supprised what you can fix without a scope. In my experience, a lot of repair jobs stem from supply issues.
If it gets to a level of using a scope I would say its gonna take up a lot of your time...

Just having a look now mate. Might not be able to reply until later....

Ok mate, after looking at the Service manual - I don't think I would accept it as payment. It looks a lot like an Akai sampler in terms of ram etc...
A lot of the parts are Rolands own (at a glance - could easily be wrong)
Unless its a power supply issue, it could take me a week (maybe more) to fix it. (bear in mind I haven't checked out your audio files yet)

I can imagine that is something to do with the digital side. In which case if you were to give yourself £5 an hour for the time you have spent on it, add it all up and you could probably have just bought one fully working.

Ok...

I think i'll keep it and ask for something extra. Could be a good project to learn electronics, or also an interesting glitch machine. If you're still up for helping out, let me know, and we could set up something via skype.

There was also a yamaha DX200 laying around. Will have to get back there
