^^^^ Are you saying you split one sound with an eq? Or 3 bandpass filters? Or do you send each note to a different channel based on what note is being played? I'm curious how that would sound.

To the OP's initial question. The sub bass should be under everything. The only time I use a sine based sub bass is when the bass line isn't on the kick drum and the kick needs a little extra. Otherwise, unless your bass line is playing a higher note, you could run into some real mud.

Well I have got this Multiband Dynamics thing in Ableton where you can separate each band. I don't know if you use Ableton but you can make Audio Effect Racks.
Then create 3 chains (Lo,Mid,High) 3 Multiband Dynamics fx (select your solo freq on each so lo, mid and highs) on each chain. Process each layer by taste ;)
