Vocal edits

Post by N - Jay »

Hey everyone,

First of all, this is not a I WANT TO SOUND LIKE... thread, I use this information to find the content of the box and think beyond.

I was wondering how some producers change vocals. Past year you've heard a lot of disco/soul/r&b samples but some are totally not recognizable by voice, only the words remind of that one r&b/younameit track. Maya Jane Coles does things to vocals, Visionquest guys etc etc. It's a matter of timbre, not speed or anything. It's more than simply autotuning, or pitching it down in my opinion.

It's some sort of hollow sound/processing trick done to vocals.

I don't want the recipe, just a few hints.

Thanks!

modulated reverbs (or maybe a chorus after the reverb).... (maybe analogish) delays which delay time changes to create some nice pitch shifts. in software this can be emulated to some extent by using granular delays. besides that some eq or filtering work with envelopes or lfo's (maybe out of phase).
