my studio computer has never been connected to the internet - ever !
it doesnt even have anti-virus software in it.

i had problems with my laptop though, which was used on the net, which i used to use for live gigs,

Another tip, which can apply to PC's and Mac's, is look at your startup items. Those drain resources and fck sh!t up like no other. On PC, if you type "msconfig" in the command prompt a box will pop up that has a tab with all the items that start automatically with your computer. Most of them run in the background. Uncheck everything you don't need (which is probably eveything). Also, turning off uncessary animations and stuff like that will help as well.

On OSX it's under: System Preferences -> Users -> Login Items. Turn off spotlight and Dashboard while you're at it.
