those plastic cases make sense from an economic point of view, the cost of custom machined metal is most often the most expensive part by far on an electronic music box, especially for the little guys who only do small manufacturing runs.

My new favourite company is Flower Electronics, whose box the Jealous Heart has changed the way I thing about percussion.... rumbling sub bass, thumps, high frequencies and built in reverberance thanks to the feedbacking nature of the unit. Quite expensive but the amount of depth to be explored is really unheard of (literally!) Same audio quality of the high end guys like Serge and Buchla.

Also worth thinking about Rob Hordijk. He has no website but builds stuff if you email him and forge a relationship with him. The Blippoo box was turning some heads when I saw someone using it live.
