Ricardo Kick

Post by Toloache »

So im really digging Ricardo Villalobos kick sound. Punchy and deep at the same time. Like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWHgVi0ha_o It's quite a lot that i try recreating it without much success.

I analyzed it, and more often than not ricardo's kicks are tuned F0, and this is part of their deepnees.
But they have this sort of sucking and punchy sound that i cannot recreate.

I tryed via sampling, pitching and filtering some 808s, and via synthesis, starting with sines (and it sounded nothing like it) and starting with squares (a bit better but not to much) .

I think it's secret it's in the use of the pitch envelope. Anyone can point me in the right direction?

Had a short play with it. The original is very short (120ms). Your's is longer.
The original drops into the sub 100 Hz region very fast. I highpassed the kick at 120 Hz and the attack started to look like one you get when you cut a waveform-cycle at a non-zero-crossing. This will create a sharp click. In order to recreate the pitch-bend you can load the kickdrum in an audio-editor and measure the single cycles from one zero-crossing to the next. If one is single cycle is for example 20ms long it will be at 50 Hz. (1000/20=50). I'd concentrate on the attack portion. You could even get out the pencil tool and paint yourself one.

Thanks for the reply! yeah, after reading the huge 10 pages kick thread i started figuring out that the secret is in the attack portion. In fact i read in some book that the attak is the most important the human hear use to recognize a sound.

My kick is longer on purpose, i use slower tempos than ricardo, so i like longer kicks better. In fact i was trying to re create a kinda like sound, not exactly it's sound... after all i try to find mine :) but it sure give inspiration to look at what he do. In amazordrum, there is this huge sub bass that interplay with the kick, and lot of percussions are pitched relatively low, so the short 120 ms kick works well in the context.

But you lost me on the cicle part. I mean, from what i understand i can find the herz of one cicle by its lenght, and after this i can calculate the pitch envelope. What i dont understand its the pratical way of making it. I work entirely in ableton. Do you mean that i can design a kick literally on paper, open an audio editor and draw entirely the waveform i like? What program do you use for things like this?
