That 70s/80s sound (kind of a wiggly, up/down soul thing)

Post by N - Jay »

Guys,

I've hearing this sound in various house and old soul/dance/pop tracks (it's like a jungle sometimes..etc..etc). It's a wiggly sound like in this Maceo Plex track at 4:42:

What is it?

Thnx.

Sounds kinda Moogish type lead. I've heard that sound before but it's a bit different to the Grandmaster Flash track. Those types of funk leads were certainly popular with Minimoog funksters but I'm not entirely sure about settings for that type of patch, I'd have to twiddle a synth and note the parameters rather than imagine it off my head.

That's probably not much help is it?

Possibly an analogue with a arpeggio?

I think it sounds like 2 (or more) detuned sawtooth waves (maybe an octave apart) with a bit of attack on cutoff. Maybe some LFO on tuning or phase, not really sure. Play around with it. Might not be arpeggio, I think it's just the delay making it sound like that. Hopefully I'm not totally off with this.

I was just thinking in terms of the tools that synths had around 70's era. You probably could do it just as well with either, or both!

The oscillator part could quite possibly be detuned saws as mentioned. An LFO on the pitch will really get things wiggly. I think what's giving the overall sound its character is the filter envelope. It sounds like longish attack with no release (not sure on the decay or sustain). So, when you get those quick key strikes the attack phase never finishes and you get that kinda sucking sound.

+1 to all of above also sometimes a slight bit of glide/portamento helps with this sound.
