I love my Vermona DRM1 mkIII.
One knob per function is great. It definitely has a particular sound but fortunately that sound is great. I find the kick and snare usually do well with some EQ and compression for shaping the dynamics and I often layer my snare with one of the other voices (drum1, drum2 or clap) to get the sound I want.
Highly recommended. If you get the voltage controlled gate options you can integrate it with a modular too.

I have 909,808,606, Machinedrum and Maschine.
I'm selling the 909 & 606 to buy a Tempest
Can't bare to sell the 808!
I use Maschine probably the most now, you could use the stock samples for years and Transistor Punch is a great pack and I'll probably get the Goldbaby one as well.
Machinedrum is great fun as well I'd advise to get the UW so you can run your own Samples
Tempest is very cool as you basically get a Evolver synth built in.
Modular is great but I still haven't gone down that route as its so friggin expensive when you start adding everything up to make all of your sounds. I'm interested in the new TipTop Audio 808&909 drum modules.
Saying that for the price of tempest or Machinedrum you could probably build a good system in modular for drums, I'd be a little worried about sequencing modules on top of that, case and power, it really starts adding up,
