yeah try the sativa not indica advice mentioned earlier and be careful of quantity. if i haven't smoked for a while it doesn't take much to get me where i need to be, especially if I'm trying to concentrate and work with music machines.

and with drugs generally, everyone is different. what works for one person won't work for another.

philip k dck wrote very intensively using speed (and paid with lifelong pancreatic damage).

but for every success story there's a syd barret, or even worse you end up driving up and down the country with massive fucking lorries to carry your prog rock egos (ELP j'accuse! )

it is all about moderation, balance and quality as has been mentioned already.

theres a big difference between chain smoking city gangster skunk from the moment you get up, and having a light toke on an pipe of organic sativa to get you in the mood in the evening for making music.
why can people not see the difference ?
you dont have to get pissed to enjoy a nice glass of red wine, and you dont have to get stoned to the point of being ingested by your sofa to enjoy the effects of cannabinoids (not just THC)

when i'm needing to be alert in the studio i wouldnt dream of smoking weed, but sometimes when you need a bit of inspiration and you intend to experiment and think outside the box there's nothing better to open up the neural pathways to new ideas.

I've found more and more lately that I enjoy being sober in the studio. I might have a beer or two.

Psychedelics - no way. I get so frustrated because I can't figure out how to make my ideas into something palpable. The last time I tried this I almost cried because I couldn't get my mind to "work," for lack of a better term. I had these ideas that I couldn't materialize and it literally drove me mad.

Ket - no way in hell. I don't understand how people take this and make music. Does not gel with me at all.

Pot - I've smoked daily for almost 15 years. I am currently not smoking during the week and only smoking a small amount on the weekends. This plant is a gift, no question. I have figured something out with sobriety though.

When I'm high I can get lost in patches and pads and have some fun. Increasingly, being sober makes me much more productive and more energetic. Being sober allows me to make decisions quickly and move onto the next item that needs attention. I won't sit there for 3 hours tweaking a filter; I'll record some different sections and move onto the next thing. I'm not afraid to commit to ideas when sober, whereas when high I will question everything.

I've noticed also that when sober, I really get into the music much more than when high. I'll be jacking in my seat and then I'll get up and dance around a bit. I don't seem to do that when high.

^^

i agree with that.

if im starting from scratch i usually don't smoke because of what you mentioned. i usually wait until theres 6 or 7 min of structure and by that time a break is needed. coming back to the project hours later after smoking is fun once there's already stuff to play with, then sometimes it's beneficial

other way i have found to combat this by building up a few mixing setups over time that load by default. sends, channels strips, instruments and mixer already setup. alot of the buzzkill if working on a blank canvas is just mouse clicking to select alot of the same tools all the time. once your project gets over 10 channels think of how many hundreds of clicks go into just loading stuff into the set...

i found this useful with my hardware with routing, no matter which DAW im in i have everything routed so there's no extra clicking of the mouse needed just to send midi data to drum machines, etc...

saving alot of copies along the way helps as well in case you get too tweak happy and f it up

also if you do smoke right away, record all the channels the whole time and you might get alot of useful stuff

What's that?

The last time I was straight and made music was prob about 5 years ago. It for me makes me want to make music. If I just hang around in the day and not smoke I tend not to make music, but if I wake up and start smoking straight away I'll make music for sure at some point in that day as my mind starts wondering off and I start thinking of ideas for tracks. It makes me really concentrate on the music. It never used to be like that though. When I first started when I was 15 I never got high and made music. Weed back then was about socialising with my friends. It wasn't until I moved to uni that I started to combine music making with getting high.

I guess we are all very different.
