It was fairly cheap and makes epic pads!

It's somewhere in between the Juno and the Jupiter, soundwise.
Like a poor mans Jupiter. :)
How much was it? Always wondered what that synth was like. Ive played on the '3p, but never heard that one.
Can't remember the exact amount, but it was less than 200£.

I own an Alpha Juno 2 as well. It's awesome, but has a much more aggressive, up-front sound than the JX8P.
The JX8P is more mellow and warm. Much better for pads!

The two synths compliment each other very well and cover most of the early/mid-eighties Roland sound palette. The JX8P even has cross-modulation like the Jupiter 8.

Both boards are cheap mostly because they have crappy interfaces.
But for the money, I can live with editing sounds through midicontrol (and not having to worry about ageing knobs) - after all, these synths are almost as old as I am (almost ... 8) )

Korg Monopoly was always one of my favorites. Wicked sounds. Mike Banks (UR) quoted it as his favorite synth of all time.

I had the JX-8P at one time and yes, it was a great pad synth. Even better, if you can find it, is the MKS-70 module which is like a 2-part JX-8P. The PG-800 controller would be the icing on the cake (had all of those at one time and I foolishly let them slip through my greasy fingers!).

The JX-8P was just a monsterous keyboard, size-wise (and the aftertouch always end up dying). If you don't have the space then the MKS is the way to go. I liked both of those machines for pads better than the Juno-106.

Check out the Siel Orchestra 2.
Essentially it's an Arp Quartet.
100% analog , old and cheap (<300E)
For strings and pads it should be a good tool.
