ItchyClips // building blocks of music

INTRODUCING

Image

Stewart Walker and Michael Morin started a project called ItchyClips where artists can buy & sell songs as Ableton Live files for 5 EURO each. Later we'll expand to other formats such as Kontakt, REX & Apple Loops.

Artists will get ~60% of each sale.

Background:
We want to create a community of artists for artists - you know, like session musicians who offer their services to other producers and performers. And it answers the question of what do do with all those not-quite-finished tracks we all have lying around.

The spirit of the project is that nobody who submits a Scratchpack can use copyrighted material; however, we want to encourage the cross-pollination of ideas and sounds between packs and the license grants permission for using a limited number of pieces of other artists' Scratchpacks in your own. So some sounds from one Scratchpack may find their way into other Scratchpacks in a Creative Commons style.

We want all styles of music!
For example, at the beginning we're going to have packs from artists who produce Balkan beats, Peruvian techno with real instruments, Croatian pop, Turkish psych rock, etc. in addition to regular techno/electro/house/etc. producers.

What's a Scratchpack?

A Scratchpack is more than just stems. It's a flexible way to play back different sections of a song: these are called "Scenes" in Ableton Live. It's a song broken down into smaller, playable pieces.

Here's what an Ableton Live song (we call them Scratchpacks) can look like - they have WAV files in them too if you want to listen but don't have Ableton Live 8:

it's a good way of making money if it catches on. but it's not good for the scene because it will result in even more tracks sounding the same.
