@Hydrogen, the MD have been used mainly for ease of use. It is possible to set up a rack like this using multiple EQ8's and reverse phase techniques but it is time consuming, adds complexity to the rack and is fairly difficult to make transparent (although I dare say someone has pulled it off). Unless I am mistaken there are no draw backs to using the MD and you get dynamics control per frequency should you wish to use it.
