Swing rules.

I like the built in swing on a lot of different drum machines. I used to make my own groove templates, but since I stopped using my computer to compose I dont do that anymore.

I like trying different percentages on my sequencing gear. I totally get a kick out of the swing quantize on the RS7000. What a sick piece of gear for sequencing!

the rule of thumb should be to listen to the track and play around with different amounts of swing. Then when you like the groove keep that setting. Swinging different ways on different parts of the track is probably a good idea if you'r aiming for a organic groovy track.

its probably important to note that on lots of hardware swing 50 is no swing and the numbers either side push notes to the right or left.

so the 100 of ableton isn't the same as that. sometimes ableton swing is a bit noticeable, but thats probably when a track is boringly arranged in the first place.

Doesn't matter as long as it sounds good.

I prefer to quantize at 1/24 with no settings. On some sounds, I do 1/32 on the 24th notes that come right before the next quarter or eighth. If I need to shift a note, I'll just do it unquantized.

Your ears will tell you if it sucks. Trust them.

You could also write in 16t time. Say you are using a drum machine for instance, switch the steps per bar to 24 and the timing to 16t, you'll get a really shuffled groove this way.

I just move the midi notes forward and backwards until it sounds funky.
