A question about audio conversion.

Post by Alex M »

I have a question about changing bit rates on an mp3 file.
If I have a file which is 192kbps for example and convert it to 320kbps will it sound the same as a file which originally is 320kps or does it simply "turn the volume up"?
Thanks.

No because you'd be making another MP3 from an MP3 already. Unless you have the original audio in a higher quality format, the 192 file is the best quality you have. Upping the MP3 will just increase file size nothing more - volume wont be affected either.

1) volume is not the same as quolity!
2) this audio compression, wav -> mp3 for example.. is lossy.. so any parts of the audio spectrum that will not pass algorithm's 'tests' (im not going to explain it more) will be 'deleted'. So there is no way to retrieve the original quality.

First of all, don't do this to play blog music or stuff you could've bought at 320 for a few cents extra.

To answer your question, no, it will not bring back the lost audio data, but you will notice a very big difference when spinning.

Sometimes I do this when a netlabel puts out a good release in a low bit rate.
I understand that not every one has the space for big files. I don't mind taking time to up-convert if the track is good. :)

192 is my personal cutoff point, no lower.
If it's 224 or higher, I don't do it.

If you convert a 192 kbps mp3 to 320 kbps the quality won't improve, in fact it will make it a little bit worse.

Cool, I think I will also give the same reply as you other guys have done 5 times now.

No, you won't gain anything by doing a conversion from 192 to 320, because the original quality is lower than the new quality.

I hope this answer helps you! 8)
