-cpu: intel dual core 2 at least 2 ghz
-ram: 2 gb (more if you want but 2 gb is ok)
-if you decide for a pc avoid windows vista (take xp instead)
-battery life and graphic card performance are also important points
-buy a sound interface

ill add more.
im also shopping 4 a laptop and pretty much everyone i've spoken to recomends an apple. i cant afford a pro, so think im gonna go 4 a macbook with 2gig of ram. That im told should be sufficient (production wise & to run ts)!
Also, i went on a friends macbook recently and despite the fact it was 2years old, everything was running smoothly... he said hes never really had a problem with viruses or it crashing. In my experience if that was a windows laptop it'd at least be mega fucked by now!
You probably know all this already, but being in a similar situation to yourself i thought id let u know that this is what im doing!

i have no idea of what you need and what your budget is, but i can recommend RME (firewire 400 or 800) and MOTU (for exemple the Ultralite)
