tascam US122

Post by mimusic »

I bought a Tascam US122 for about 240 euro's (2 months ago), it's pretty good sound quality for recording. I use it to record my Korg ES-1, and the Direct switch is pretty nice. It allows you to directly hear what is fead in without going via the soft you use. It's pretty handy because it also has Midi IN/OUT and you can use a MIC.

The box is very robust and the nobs are also pretty nice and sensitive.

BUT! when I intalled it and made it work I found that my Win XP got VERY unstable. There seems to be some incompatibility with windows standard sound device. I created a profile in windows where I disabled the default win sound device when using the Tascam and that works better. But as soon as I use some program which tries to access the windows default sound device I get a blue screen for 1 sec and the laptop spontainiously switches OFF !!!
I'm using it with Live and Reason and there it's nice, but I really have to be carefull which programs I open next to that....

Looking back, I would not buy this again because of the instability of windows, but for now it's fine for what I use it for. In the future I would also go for something which has more then 1 output so if doing a live set you can prelisten to stuff.

Cheers,

At the moment I'm looking at these (decided I won't go for the Ozone):

M-Audio Audiophile USB
M-Audio Audiophile FireWire
Edirol UA-25 (USB)
Digidesign Mbox

I know the Audiophile PCI card is pretty good but I heard quite some negative stories about the USB and FireWire versions...unbalanced I/O's, noise, latency issues etc. I don't know anything about the UA-25, Edirol seems a pretty good company but this thing is USB and in the same price range...

The Mbox is more expensive but I'm willing to save up for it if it's really good. I've worked with ProTools LE before (only briefly) and I liked the program...but will this thing work well with other software like Reason and Live? Not sure if I still need Live though if I have Protools.

The Mbox is integrated perfectly with reason and live...at least in my
experience. I have been using it in conjunction with those programs
for about 18 months now and have no problems. They recognize the
hardware immediately...which makes sense since PT ships with stripped
down versions of each.

Pro Tools does not compare to Live for producing. Live is not a DAW.
PT is very good at recording and editing audio...I feel like anything else
is in to bring in more purchases. I use Live to produce and then I edit
and master in PT.

Thanks for the replies...still not sure yet if it'll be Audiophile FW or Mbox...Mbox comes with ProTools and probably better quality, but Audiophile also has MIDI in/outs.

If only I had the money, I'd buy one of these
