Great topic! Thx.
I'm currently devouring the book The Dance Music Manual: Tools, Toy and Techniques, by Rick Snoman, 1ed. The second edition is due next month. I know, it's not free, but there is a worthwhile companion site:

Its forum is useful, too:

I have absolutely no affiliation with that book, author, or publishing house. I'm just trying to make a kind suggestion.MINIMALTECHNOHOUSE wrote:Blatant plug; fck offswindle wrote:Great topic! Thx.

I have that book too -- it's one of the best books I've read on electronic music theory. Goes over each genre and describes how to build classic sounds. Even has one of the best short chapters on music theory I've read, and good suggested listening tracks.swindle wrote:I have absolutely no affiliation with that book, author, or publishing house. wow, that's a really good read.
I feel like I should be adding something to this list. The videos at www.macprovideo.com have helped me out a lot in understanding DAWs and synth programming.
I've found the tutorials by Martin Sitter and Steve Horelick to be the better ones (Logic 101 and a few of the synth tutorials). There's also a good tutorial there on mixing electronic music by Olav Basoski, going over the basics of EQ and compression in dance music.
The site runs discounts pretty often, and if you choose to download (rather than having them mail you a DVD) the tutorials there's a good discount added to the order.
