the world of vsts is huge....you'll never know the way how someone will make something sound like this....there are hundresnd of ways....i'm not being completly negative with your ideas but i told you what i know....

For me Kontakt is the best sampler out there. Fantastic onboard effects, you can do a whole track inside Kontakt if you want. It's semi-modular, this application is super deeep. It even has a scripting language built into it. It really pays off to read the manual of this baby if you want to use it to it's fullest potential.

Well, if one should go by the interviews James have given in the past, he used Buzz for making the main part of his tracks and Cubase for polishing, time stretching, etc. Don't see why he would lie about using a freeware app... Apparently has moved on to Max/Msp now.
