minimal drum kit - tips and tricks

Post by kroe »

I'm having some trouble to find good minimal drum samples, so i'm trying to learn how to do them bymyself.

The best start, to me, is to link a ASDR envelope to the sample volume, then tweak a bit... often i make my samples shorter. sustain to 0, and decay to taste.

Generally i adjust the pitch of the sample to fit better with the others, and sometimes apply some reverb/chorus.

And you? What do you generally do to make the sample "minimalistic" ?

Some advices on good minimal sample cds?
Any special efx to do this job?
Any other modulation?

Do a "magical procedure" exists?

if you are a live user, try to watch (and make) the operator tutorials about making drum sounds with synths.
You'll be able to understand how to make drum sound with any synth in a few hours if not minutes.
At the end it's all about envelope (!!!), with a bit of patience you'll be able to turn almost every synth in a drum machine.
Fact is that we all have heard many many times the 606-808-909 drum sounds, it could be nice to come up with new drum sounds every now and then, in my humhle opinion -> that's why my 909 and 606 and the studio mate 808 are sitting in a corner of the studio.

ok i just had a quick piddle about with live and operator. these are by no means final products but hopefully they give you all an idea on how to make some percussive sounds from synthesis. feel free to use these in whatever way you want. in fact if you use these at all tell me i want to hear how you guys manipulate them. and while i am at it does anyone here want a sample pack of drum sounds made by myself? that is if you don't find what i just made to be complete rubbish. :D

oh yeah the linked file!
