Karafuto aka Fumiya tanaka

Post by daedum »

Anyone have any idea about this guy? in 2001 I caught him playing as Karafuto in tokyo, and it was one of the best minimal sets ive heard. Right in the middle he broke into some jazzy stuff (and was wondering what was up.. sounded good but a bit weird). I talked with him later and told me about his torema label. I have yet to see any of his tracks in American record stores. But i bought a mix CD in tokyo that was good. When he plays under his real name, Fumiya Tanaka, its the more hard drummy techno.. and probably the best known dj in japan.

normally Fumiya doesn't play what you'd call minimal. he's more dark/hard. brummie-ish.
good dj. some good productions. questionable sampling ethics.

Not any more I don't think. Heard him djing about a year ago in Leeds and he was minimal then as well. Used to be harder years ago.
