ARGY (Poker Flat)

Post by e99 »

German tastemakers Poker Flat first stumbled across Greek prodigy Argyris Theofilis back in 2005, first releasing the wonky tech house of Nuthouse, and then his unforgettable Love Dose – a mish-mash of subtle tribal rhythm, deep monotone bass, rampant acid licks, and tripped-out 8-bit computer game riffage, topped off with a sultry Spanish female vocal. Truly unique, the track was championed and remixed by a certain Luciano, who turned it into a jacking minimal house bouncer, and led the wider world to ask “Who is this Argy character?”

Fast-forward to now (that’s June 2008 in case you hadn’t noticed), and Argy has a slew of seriously tasty releases under his belt, including several more releases for his “mentors” Poker Flat, to Cocoon, to Liebe Detail, and even Defected. From the sexy wiggle of his remix of D-Saw & Huntemann’s Red Patches, to the warped, hypnotic groove of Unreliable Virgin, and the warm techy shuffle of The Storm, it’s virtually all quality gear. You never know quite what you’re going to get from him on each release, except that it’s sure to be a groover, and more than often than not will have a little tribal flow going.

Now with a debut album out on Poker Flat – a collection of original productions and collaborations with heroes of his like DJ Gregory and Jerome Sydenham and leaders of the new school like The Mole and Solomun, we are very much in Argy’s moment.
