Ink & Needle Interview + James Mowbray promo mix

Post by e99 »

Shrouded in mystery and with a strong focus on visuals and art, Ink & Needle's Tattoo Records series has been gathering much acclaim with its first 3 releases, all deep, melodic house and techno hybrids. The tracks don't have names; instead each side is represented by a photo of a tattoo. They're from Denmark, they were masks, and they are playing in London this Saturday at Heavy Industries @ Corsica Studios. Intrigued? Keep reading to find out more, and to find a FREE PROMO MIX from Heavy Industries boss James Mowbray....

When and how did you first get into electronic music?

About 1993, with the first wave of minimal techno. We still draw influences from this era, where so many beautiful records where made.

When did you make your first track? Do you still have it, and was it any good?

Our first EP was released ‘95. For the period, it was super cool. Very experimental and different since we were some of the first to sample funk records in techno. Listening to it now, the horrible sound quality ruins the tracks. Vinyl mastering and production technique has come a long way since then.

What’s the dance music scene like in Denmark?

It’s very strong. It’s spreading a lot, and the kids know what they want. Globalisation and the internet has made all music widely available, and the effect of that is seen in Denmark. It seems there is a strong following in every city.

How would you describe the Ink & Needle sound?

Romantic minimal dance music. We are taking the redundance out of minimal techno. We need melodies, energy and passion.

Who have been your key influences over the years?

Robert Hood, Underground Resistance, Plastikman, Kenny Larkin, but also classic ‘80s rock like Dire Straits. We are inspired by a lot of different artists.

Tattoos? Why?

Because tattoos are like music. They are references to a moment in time. Often a special moment, worth preserving. We feel the same way about music. Tracks are moments in time, and when we listen to music, it stimulates a lot of memories.

So you’re bringing your live show to Heavy Industries...what does this involve?

It involves a lot of action. Even though we play from a laptop, we make a big effort of differentiate our shows from the usual ilooklikeimcheckingmyemail sets. We use electronic drums and a lot of effects machines to spice it up. Yeah, and we wear masks. It’s part of our concept of remaining anonymous. The music is important, not us.

The second room will be filled with the sounds of dubstep. Have you heard much of the genre?

Actually I don’t really understand what it is, but I’m very curious about it. I’ll definitely be checking it out. It’s very inspiring with new genres.

What have been the best gigs of your career thus far?

Too many to mention. We are big fans of illegal parties, and some of the best nights have been in dirty grimey warehouses. Actually some of the best nights have been in the youth house in Copenhagen, witch was recently torn down causing severe riots around here.

What would you like to achieve in your career as a musician?

We have no specific ambition. We enjoy challenging our selves, and exploring new musical concepts. It’s important for us too keep on edge with what we do. If you can’t contribute with something new as a musician, you have no place in time.
