Dawson Baca aka Big Bully :: DJ/VOCALIST/MUSICIAN/PRODUCER/LABEL HEAD OF MINERAL MUSICA.
At the age of 5, Dawson started singing and playing guitar. Growing up, he was influenced by the sounds of Neil Young and Johnny Cash records that played regularly on the family phonograph. By age 8, he was already writing and performing original songs in local talent shows, beating out contestants 3 times his age. During his teenage years he learned to play other instruments for fun (bass, drums, percussion) while jamming with friends and playing in various local bands.
After attending his first underground party in 1991, it was clear to Dawson that techno was something he wanted to become actively involved in. However, the critical turning point came a week later, after hearing Psychic TV perform an acid house set that literally made his jaw drop. That night inspired a whole new outlook in music for Dawson.
Four years later, Dawson began to dj. Known back then as DJ Decibel, he spun funky house and breaks that were heavily influenced by the sounds coming out of San Francisco and Chicago. By 1996, he began playing a few local parties, and shortly thereafter was invited to play in Mexico City. He ended up living there for over a year, where he held a weekly residency at the infamous Bass Station with longtime friends, Jerga and Jethro. Together, they explored the sounds of house, techno, breaks and electro.
In 1997, Dawson returned to Los Angeles, only to be invited back to Mexico City the next year to play alongside Ricardo Villalobos and Dandy Jack, Pink Elln and Khan. This trip turned into a month long vacation. While there, he and Jerga organized a small outdoor gathering, inviting Ricardo to play with them. At this party, Ricardo spun an 8 hour set of house and techno that completely blew everyone's mind. This experience immediately affected Dawson's sound and direction.
Having already been influenced by the Cologne sound (Air Liquide, Khan), Disko B, electro and American techno such as Dj Slip, Chris Sattinger, Comminique, Kooky Scientist, Synewave, and Octave One, Dawson started adding records to his collection, such as the Studio One series, Cytrax , Jasper, Kit Clayton, Twerk, Sutekh, Tejada, Basic Channel, Thomas Brinkmann, and early Playhouse and Perlon releases.
Since then he has dj'ed at various parties/clubs in the following countries:
U.S., Mexico, Japan (club Rockets, JB's), Italy (Street Rave Parade), Germany (Tresor Club, Fusion Festival, Watergate, Club Der Visionaires) and Sweden.
In 2004, Dawson started his own label, Mineral Musica along with help from Jerga. The first release (MNL01) was a collaboration between the two of them under the name, Modelo Espacial. Shortly after, Mineral was picked up by Word And Sound distribution (Germany).
In 2005, while visiting Jay Haze at his studio in Berlin, a conversation about vocals quickly led to Dawson stepping up to the microphone, and displaying his skills, right there on the spot. That session resulted in the song "A Warning" that eventually appeared on Bearback's Family Affair LP. More importantly, this would be the birth of Big Bully, the vocalist. And from there the rest is history...
