Blatant sampling. Good? bad? Or fun?

Post by Hutch »

So lately I been listening to music and a lot of the newer house stuff I have been hearing a lot of re-sampling. It is majorly evident right now more than ever, wheather is a voice sample, a bassline, or whatever. I'm not that heavily into producing, or don't think I really know it all (My Friends say differ), but I guess that as the years pass bye, it seems that some artists that are trying to get known fast are using obvious samples to get on top. I'm sure this is nothing new for techno and house, (although it seemed more rare whatever years ago) but what do you guys think? Is it really ok now? If the beat is good and you like the track does it even matter? If the samples are cleared is it ok? Is it fun when you catch samples most people wouldn't be able to catch? Are we just in a time when we everything has come full circle?

Here some examples:

this don't even need to compare.....

i don't mind sampling: it's (or maybe was) all part of the culture which saw the dj set as the most important form of its music, not the tracks itself or the mpeople that produced it, but some, like e.g. Theo Parrish use is wisely, while others don't :)

if it sounds good then its ok...
if it sounds sh!t then its not...

eg. The Avalanches... all samples... amazing music.

i do enjoy having a familiar handle to latch on to.
especially if its been reinterpreted into new and interesting ways..

kinda like cover bands that rework songs into new ways.

fyi...99% sure that "just close your eyes" sample is from the doors, and its been used to death at least 20 times. there's so many versions of the hard techno track by gecko it makes my brain hurt.
