Hi

The inputs at the back for this arent XLR - Mix out, booth out, master out, record out

If I've got active monitors can I use the balanced output then on each speaker - like a guitar cable.

Is using XLR better - I had a pioneer 600 before and used XLR connections then.

yes you can should be no problem.

XLR only has advantages over really long distances. under 10 meters, there shouldnt be any differences.

also on the mixer, you mean outputs, and on the speaker you mean inputs.
