another factor to consider is the fact that you can get infinitely more variety and control, crossmodulation, morphing of sounds, hybrid percussive/melodic elements, etc etc.. from synthesizing your percussion, rather than using fixed voices or samples. maybe drum machines are trying too hard to em...
