if you want to become good like them, you should take the advice already given: EXPERIMENT, READ BOOKS...and spend less time on forums

i guess compression on real instruemtns is used mostly to limit the dynamic.
in techno its used more for sound design, so i absolutely think compression is essentiell for making techno.

to me personally its really important to have a lot of options for one track so i usually make 4-5 out of one and decide at the end which one is worth to get finished. i got a lot of new sounds out of this worklflow and i can compare the tracks without just guessing what i might could change.

you can make these kicks with ultrabeat easily. i really cant see anything special about this track. good techinque should be standard!

about ableton5..they rewrote the audio engine in 7, so yes its sounds much better with newer versions.
