I was told that modern well designed equipment will be stressed less by leaving on for an extra hour than going through a power cycle in the time. I asked my teacher and he did say that turning electronic devices on and off constantly does lessen their life span. Overheating breaks components too of course, so leaving your gear on all the time is not smart either. Still, I wouldn't turn off my gear for a short break. Meanwhile, if you want to experiment: Get two units of the same gear. Keep the other piece of gear on for x hours, while you turn on and off the power with the other for x hours.
