Fruity Loops, Ableton, Reason are all good ways to get started.
As for "grooveboxes", I'd consider an EMX-1 before a Roland.
I think you'd be more satisfied with software and a nice controller.

UK Funky gets a similar bad rap as dubstep.
I remember back when my friends and I would make fun of "speed garbage" it was pretty much the same story. There's plenty of good music, but it's being overshadowed by gimmicky stuff.
