i usually use drumazon or my jomox mbase for the low and and use a sample to give the kick a little more character... just use a high or bandpass filter to get the sound right on the layering. i send those to a group channel and compress them (outboard) and then eq... note: the outboard compression ...

i wouldn't compress the attack of a snare, it's better to let that initial transient through so you can then bring the decay up to the same level as the attack and get the whole sound evened out... just my opinion. i also usually find that the snare works better a few ticks after the kick, not befor...

ive always liked those behringers for djing on... they have an 8 3/4" woofer so the bass is pretty loud and you can adjust them for the room.

obviously they arent the best for producing but i had a pair that held up for years of dj abuse. i paid like $300 american

if a gate or eq isnt working, that's your only option unless you try spending hours finding the exact frequencies and getting surgical with an eq
