Re: Tape Machines

for pre master recordings i would go at least for an 15 ips unit.
something like the revox a77 and/or b77 will be really nice for these kinda stuff...

for more experimental use i would say try to get a tascam 424 or something like that.
really lo-fi, pitch control, eq and even aux channels.

Re: stereo speakers

for a hi fi set. try a set of acive Philips MFB speakers.
Imo they're pretty good.

For nearfield studio speakers i would suggest dynaudio and nothing else then dynaudio.
But that's probably just a matter of taste

Re: When mastering, where should i cut off in the low end?

I want to add something about cutting with a 48db/o filter. The funny party is that such kinda filter creates an enourmess resonance on the frequency you're cutting on. That could result to even more sub instead of less. Yes maybe your 30hz is gone, but god damn you got some 35 hz back for that son!...

Re: cheap tape saturation

I use a tascam portastudio 414.
Don't know if it has 3 heads, but it works damn good for some good dirt on the sounds!

Also planning buying a revox 77 with 15 ips to use it as a mastertape for all my pre-masters
