The thing that helped me learn how to structure tracks was to analyse the music I love. Map out tracks, get inside them. Work out the mechanics of the music and the arrangements. I can't say enough how much this has helped develop my style, you'll be suprised how much you learn from it.

For me if I'm feeling particularly unispired then I find there's no point trying to force something. I usually just have a mix or something and usually an idea or sound will jump out and me and get the creativity flowing again.

Hardware or software? It doesn't matter. All that matters is that the person sat in the studio is able to express himself through the equipment he's sat in front of. It's about the ability to exploit the gear you have, not what gear own.
