It's important to note that these guys used whatever they could get their hands on. The korg poly800 is one of the worse analog synth ever made. It sold a lot because it was cheap but everyone hated them.

for me its been about finding the right equipment. looking at a computer screen while i compose just doesn't work for me. i'm not against computers in the studio or anything like that but i like starting a tune with a groovebox.
