Just thought I would repost the Slices feature from the general forum as this month feature Shed stating around 6:10 that he's a software only man when it comes to production.
I think it's worth a discussion as he has such a unique 'soulful' (see soulful post) sound that doesn't sound like the computer made it.
I can't help feeling both admiration but also a bit of disappointement as I always saw him as a true hardware hero.
Shed Interview: 'No hardware anymore'
Re: Shed Interview: 'No hardware anymore'
He still uses a drum machine. Maybe even more than one.
Every time i saw him play live he had his Jomox 09 with him.
They're all Ableton heads though. Shed, Dettmann, Klock...

Re: Shed Interview: 'No hardware anymore'
I dunno if I'd say I'm disappointed, there's nothing stopping his sort of sound being made with powerful modern software just because it's quite raw and 90s sounding.
Re: Shed Interview: 'No hardware anymore'
It doesn't suprise me really. The production sounds clean and modern to me.
Re: Shed Interview: 'No hardware anymore'
hes prob built up so many samples over the years from his hardware that he doesn't need to get out his machines anymore.
Re: Shed Interview: 'No hardware anymore'
he has said that he is still using drums that he sampled from early 90s hardcore records.
there is a big difference between using a computer as a workstation and using softsynths/commercially available sample packs as your sound sources.

Re: Shed Interview: 'No hardware anymore'
I can't help but think of burial as a similar artist. They have a similar sound and are both computer based. They both make very soulful music. Also I always had the impression that shed and burial work from very clear ideas of were they wan't to go. Their music dosen't sound that improvised to me. It's very "intelligent" and "designed".
Re: Shed Interview: 'No hardware anymore'
To be honest, I don't see the connection to whether a bit of music being made with hardware or software has any correlation to it being 'soulful' or not.
