NEIL TEMPLAR

http://soundcloud.com/neil-templar

Neil Templar’s love of electronic dance music began in the days of acid house, while listening to the likes of Mr. Fingers, Phuture and Frankie Knuckles. Soon enough the harder techno sounds of Joey Beltram, F.U.S.E., and C.J.Bolland ensured a long standing love affair was a certainty. These sounds have been the main influence on Templar’s musical style. Over the years his musical style has meandered thru techno, house, acid, electro, IDM, minimal and ambient, often working thru each of the genres during a set, though the feel is always the same – moody, raw and uncompromising. Always moving forward, but never forgetting his oldskool roots.
Between 1995 and 2005, Templar’s djing career took him all over the UK, playing at almost every techno night worth noting in Scotland. Most notoriously while resident/founder/promoter at Edinburgh’s legendary DOGMA, during which time he played alongside many techno legends such as Speedy J, Surgeon, Green Velvet,Chris Liebing, Adam X, The Horrorist, the list goes on…
In 2005, Templar moved to Amsterdam, where his dj career took a back seat for a couple of years, as he focused on learning the new skills of working as a theatre technician. It was during this time, in an unfortunate storage incident, almost his entire record collection was lost. Rather than be defeated by this blow, he instead saw the opportunity it presented, and made the obvious switch from playing vinyl, to mp3. With what little of his record collection was left, and his now fledgling mp3 collection, Templar began again, playing monthly slots at the Greenhouse Effect in Amsterdam’s Red-Light District, and began to pick up gigs around town. Soon a chance meeting with a fellow Dutch dj RNDR, resulted in the formation of N8W8 (nachtwacht – night watch), and together they were responsible for one of the most celebrated beach parties of the Summer of 2009.
In 2010, Templar came back to his hometown of Edinburgh, quickly putting his stamp back on the techno scene, playing regular sets at SPLIT @Cab Vol, as well as the excellent SUBSTANCE NYE party.
2011 so far has seen the resurrection of DOGMA, with their 10th Anniversary party, a hugely successful capacity-full event. Already lined up for the rest of the year are a number of exciting dates including – the EDINBURGH TECHNO GATHERING @Potterow, May 20th. TECHNO FRENZY @The Store (formerly GRV) 17th June. AWAKEN, new bi-monthly Conscious Clubbing Tantra based experience @Old St. Paul’s church, 18th June. SYNTHETIC ft Dan Bell and 3D!T live @Bongo Club, 2nd July. FREE-IN-THE-PARK festival, 8-10TH July. PULSE ft Steve Rachmad, Silicone Soul and Harvey McKay @Cab Vol, 13th August. AUDIO SOUP MUSIC FESTIVAL @Garvald, East Lothian, 2/3 September. EDINBURGH TECHNO GATHERING II, in October, and continuing regular sets at SPLIT @Cab Vol…
As a result of the streamlining of his music collection, his style has once again returned to a very electronic techno oriented sound.
You can expect dark, raw, minimal moodiness with attitude. An ever present oldskool flavour, underlying cutting edge yet classic feeling techno vibes.
